Subject: [*] CopyDoubler 2.0.2 Lite Patcher
October 6, 1993
Welcome!
This program patches the following versions of CopyDoubler to CopyDoubler
2.0.2
Lite:
CopyDoubler 1.0 (AutoDoubler version)
CopyDoubler 1.0.1A (AutoDoubler version)
CopyDoubler 2.0 Lite
CopyDoubler 2.0.1 Lite
This patcher does not patch CopyDoubler 1.0.1, the full version of CopyDoubler
2.0.x, any version of the CopyDoubler Demo. A separate patcher called
CopyDoubler 2.0.2 Updater is available for the full version of CopyDoubler
2.0.
Users of CopyDoubler 1.0.1 (the standalone version not shipped with
AutoDoubler)
should contact Fifth Generation Systems about upgrading to the full version of
CopyDoubler 2.0.2.
This patching program will automatically patch the installed copy if it can be
located. To patch a specific copy of CopyDoubler, hold down the Option key
while clicking the "Patch" button. If you are patching the installed version
(the default), you must restart your Macintosh after the patching process is
finished for the changes to take effect.
CopyDoubler 1.0 and 1.0.1A users: CopyDoubler 2.0.2 Lite is very similiar to
CopyDoubler 1.0.x, with the additional ability of compressing files as they
are
copied. To use this feature, hold down the Control key (Shift for Mac Plus
users) while invoking a copy to bring up an options dialog, where compression
and other one-time options can be set.
CopyDoubler 2.0.2 Changes:
* Fixed an incompatibility with the Quadra 840av and Centris 660av.
* Fixed a bug which caused CopyDoubler not to delete all files on a
destination
floppy when doing a floppy-to-floppy disk copy. This bug sometimes caused an
Insufficient disk space message.
* Fixed an incompatibility with UnderWare from Bit Jugglers.

This disk, however was definitely not being shared. In the sharing setup box,

IMHO, MacintoshHD is too long a name for a device. On my Mac Classic, running

Subject: Compaq TV Ad (Just like Mac!)
So, has anyone else seen the lastest broadside in the audio-visual computer
wars from Compaq? Really a neat advertisement, at first, as I was watching
television the other day. The ad was saying "Don't you hate looking for
things on your computer... not knowing where things are... things that are
hard to open..." and so on...
"Gee," I thought, "this must be an ad for Macintosh... you just click
things to run them, or use command-F to find them..."
And then the ad says "It's so advanced, you just talk to it!" and the
actor says "Computer, run database file" or something like that.
"Oh," I think... "the new A/V Mac. Neat ad..." And then, "Now available
from Compaq, the (whatever computer it was)". Whoops!
Seems to me, you still have a really hard time finding stuff on an IBM.
Setting up Windoze is a pain. Installing new programs takes forever.
You still have to hunt for the program before you can run it. Okay, so you
can talk to it now. But you *still* have to go to all the same trouble as
before, right?
Apple needs to answer this salvo: Kind of a "We did it first" advertisement.
If you ask me (yeah, I know, you didn't, really...) Apple did all the latest
IBM things first... Windoze, GUIs, excellent digitized sound (that *doesn't*
require a separate add-on card), a mouse interface, built-in networking...
If they're smart, Apple will seize this opportunity and produce their own
ad showing the new systems they sell.

Subject: Defining zones in an EtherTalk Mac network
Hello again...me and my probably obvious questions.....
Thanks in advance for the info on domain name resolving and friends
using MaTCP. Our network is slowly but surely building up.
Now, supposing you have a group of Macs, all with Ethernet cards,
and you want them to be in a zone created just for them. How do you
go about defining it so it will appear in the list of available zones ?
Do you have to have a specific device dedicated to that purpose, or
can you just add the new zone to the list maintained by the local
Gators & Fastpaths ? We have a Netware for Mac server; can that do
the trick ?
Thanks in advance.
Juan
P.S. We currently have a Fastpath with the desired new zone as its
default, but I want to use it for something else, and hence
want the zone to survive by itself, without needing the FP as
a nanny...

Subject: Desperatly Seeking Newton
My how times have changed (or have they?). Here I am with 700 big
ones in my handing looking to buy a Newton MessagePad. An easy
assignment? Think again. It's easier to find a needle in a haystack.
My first attempt was to contact our campus computer store. After
all, they sell Macs and a Newton is just a minature Mac. ;-) No,
I was told (rather nicely actually) that the Newton was not available
for sale in our campus computer store and probably wouldn't be. I
was advised to contact a local Apple dealer.
No problem. I called the only Apple dealer in Morgantown (unfortunately,
not an authorized distributor, but they have lots of Macs), T.J. Business
Systems (part of MicroAge). Nope. TJ doesn't plan to carry the Newton
either. (Profit margins are too slim). They suggest I call Apple's 800
Newton number for a local dealer.
So I called Apple first thing the next morning. Surprise, there is
actually someone awake in Cupertino at 8 am Eastern, 5 am Pacific!
She tells me to call Silo, a consumer electronics store in Pittsburgh.
I call Silo, but the salesperson who answers the phone tells me that
there is a Newton specialist that I need to talk to. That sounds
encouraging, so I ask to talk with him. "Oh, he only works the
evening shift." is the reply.
After a couple of attempts, I finally get the expert on the phone.
I ask what is the best way to purchase a Newton MessagePad from them.
He says, "Yeah, well, ahhh. You see, err,we were going to carry the
Newton, but, ahhh, well, ahhh, you see, ahhh, we changed our mind.
We now have no plans to carry the Newton."
Trying to be helpful, I respond, "Hmmm. Then you ought to tell
Apple that you decided not to carry the Newton line. They are still
giving out your phone number."
He replies, "Yeah. We've been trying, but Apple refuses to believe
us. It's all very frustrating."
I'll say!
So I ask, does anyone carry the Newton?
He responds, "Sure. Call CompUSA."
So I tried to call CompUSA, but wasn't able to get past their automated
voice mail system. I've left messages asking for someone to please get
back to me about how I can buy a Newton from them. As the song goes,
"No reply."
Maybe I should send a message directly to Cupertino. If they will send me a
Newton directly, I will send them my green stuff. Apple, you still
need people to buy your products, right?
BTW, I did find a dealer who will sell me the Newton, but they are
200 miles away and want to charge list price. Arrgh!

Though I don't use it myself (I've no need for it), I think TattleTale will
satisfy your first problem. It can watch over your boot-up and report memory
used by each extension loaded. Frankly, I don't know if (or how much) it'll
help you with your second problem - I don't remember my trial well enough.
I do remember being both impressed and amused by the number of things it

Subject: Electronic Versions of Inside Mac (A)
Natsu,
There are electronic versions of many of the new Inside Mac publications.
The
exact ones I couldn't name off my head, but several (it seems that they show
up
in print before they show up on the CDs).
You need Apple's Doc Viewer to read the new IMs, available also on the CDs and
>From ftp.apple.com, last I checked.
With the first issue of the Bookmard CD, the IMs were absent. After much
outcry
>From the developer community, I believe that decision was reversed, and they
are once again on the Bookmark CDs.
I know that new electronic releases of the NIMs usually show up on developer
CDs, but I can't recall if they keep a full set on everyone.
I'm not certain what you are asking with the "Fulltext" question, but the
electronic versions do appear exactly as their printed counterparts, which in
this case would I guess be fulltext.
The old versions of IM existed electronically in the form of two, very large
Hypercard stacks. I presume these are still available at ftp.apple.com.

Any EN/SC box can 'co-exist' with the Asante card. Asante has one that should
work
quite well. I've set up several people with these 'boxes.' Be careful that you
don't get the one with the 30-pin SCSI connector - that's the one for the
PowerBooks.
The only problem is that you'll need to be certain of your intended use.
Remember that a Mac can only use one network connection at a time - unless you
plan on routing between networks using either AppleTalk Internet Router (AIR)
or
Liaison.
Take care.

computers to connect to the server. To be able to use Daedalus I need to
have the server's Daedalus folder on all of the workstations, but after
connecting 10 computers, I get a message saying the server can accept no
more users, try again later. If I log off one of the connected
workstations, then I can connect the one that was denyed earlier. All of
this is prior to launching Daedalus, so it's not a licensing limitation. I
thought maybe there was a limit to the number of guests Appleshare would
permit and tried to set up an 11th workstation as a registured user, but
still got the same message.
Does anyone out there have any ideas as to how to correct
these problems so I can network the entire lab with the System 7.1
Appleshare extension? The users guide seems to indicate that I should be
able to network up to 100, with less than 50 recommended. Is this wrong?

Liking it, I gave a copy to the journalism teacher at my school, who just

I inspect the icons: several have metamorphosed! The Amiga'sGotBalls icon

the root of the icon directory changed into a woman, rendered in halftone!
The setup is basically plain-Jane, with SAM, PopChar, and mabye one or two

install Windows on the LC? Has a student hacked a copy of Timbuktu to
change the icons over the AppleTalk network without displaying the telltale

Sorry, but the four slots in the IIsi must all be populated by the same
type of SIMM. In other words, your configuration could be 3meg, 5 meg, 9

It's funny, but when last I checked I thought _Motorola_ was Intel's

And another point: Apple's Motorola based computers DO run DOS/Windoze (

I'm a bit rusty. But, given a full system install of System 6 for the
IIgs, it should be able to use the Mac as a file server. It won't work the
other way around; System 6 for the GS doesn't have anything analogous to
the Mac's System 7 filesharing.
If I remember correctly, you want to access it via the chooser, as you
would on a Mac; not through an AppleShare control panel.
In any case, I know it's possible...Adam Engst and I hooked my GS and his

If the GS has an accelerator in it, you may have to slow it down to make
the AppleTalk connection work properly...

NAVIGATING THE INTERNET: LET'S GO GOPHERIN'
Richard J. Smith and Jim Gerland
"Navigating the Internet: Let's go Gopherin'" is a two or three
week, electronic mail, distance education course that will
introduce the new and intermediate user of the Internet to the
popular navigating tool--Gopher.
The Internet Gopher, developed by the University of Minnesota, is
a navigating tool that incorporates basic Internet services
into one easy-to-use program. File transfer and remote login are
simplified by Gopher; Gopher knows the remote machines' Internet
addresses, thus relieving the user of the tedious chore of
remembering and entering the sometimes encryptic Internet
addressing schemes.
This course will last for two or three weeks and will cover the
basic connections to a Gopher, look at selected Gopher sites,
create Gopher "bookmarks", and search "Gopherspace" with the help
of the powerful program--Veronica.
Information on different types of Gopher clients that are
available and their primary differences will be explained, and
installation and maintenance of a Gopher client and server will
conclude the course.
The course will consist of e-mail instructions and illustrations
that can be read and followed, or participants can save the
information to read at their own pace and location.
Dates: October 18, 1993 through the beginning of November.
Costs: Free
To register for "Navigating the Internet: Let's go Gopherin'"
sign up to the list gophern by sending an e-mail message to the
listserv:
listserv@ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu
In the body of the e-mail message enter:
subscribe gophern Yourfirstname Yourlastname
This will automatically register you for the course.
(Note the missing "i and g" in gophering)
This course is intended for new, novice or intermediate Internet
users. You should be able to read and use your e-mail and a
TCP/IP connection is needed to actually use Gopher. Those on
Internet services who do not have full Internet access may not
receive all the benefits of the course. Also note that there
will probably be more than 100 e-mail messages of varying
lengths. Please consider your disk space and any e-mail costs
before registering for the course.

That sounds like Silverlining. It gives the option to show disk
use by turning a few pixels in the upper left hand corner of the
screen on and off with disk activity. It can be turned off by
running the Silverlining application and selecting customize from
the drive menu.
I've heard things that seem to indicate that it's not possible to
format "non Apple drives" with Apple's format application. I don't
know if that's true or not, but if W. Rowe already owns a current

This probably won't solve the problem, but I noticed that restarting a

Since the restart button is recessed, you must activate it with a paper

As I expected, this subject has provoked quite a bit of discussion here.
Several readers have mentioned that Apple also advertises in magazines for

customers away from their competitors. My problem is with product-oriented
magazines (such as MacUser), which supposedly cater to a certain group of con-

that ad weakens the credibility of MacUser. Likewise, running Apple ads
weakensthe credibility of PC-oriented magazines.

Subject: Using System 6 rather than 7
In a recent digest, Peter Kocourek suggests that one has to be a luddite
to keep using system 6. I'd like to suggest that there are good reasons
for me (and I suspect others as well) to keep using system 6. I have
an SE and a Plus, both with four megs of RAM. This just isn't enough
memory to really use system 7. In a perfect world, I would simply dump
these two systems and buy a Quadra and be a happy system 7 camper. In
the real world, I have to pay the rent, pay off the car, pay off the
student loans, etc. Just wanted to remind people that there really *are*
Mac users that are quite happy with system 6 on our non-networked, stable
(if antiquated) systems. So please, keep writing software that supports
system 6 whenever possible. If it's not possible, okay, that's the breaks.
I'll just keep saving my pennies for a PowerPC :-).

Subject: WAIS for Mac

Since the author, Harry Morris, works for WAIS, you're close enough. :-)

Close, but no cigar. :-) It's "Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh".
I do talk about using WAIS for Mac and the newest entry into the WAIS
client market, MacWAIS.

You should definitely do this. Version 1.2a fixes some bugs in 1.1
and is the recommended version right now. I don't know why the WAIS
folks haven't merged them into a single 1.2 archive yet - we talked
about them doing that a while back...
cheers ... -Adam

From: Pete Tamas <GNOME%TEMPLEVM.BITNET@Forsythe.Stanford.EDU>
Subject: What is the rela betw LPI of output and DPI of scan
There is a formula bandied about that indicates that the best resolution
to scan a graphic is
2 X LPI X % that you will scale the graphic.
In other words, a graphic you wish to print at 100% of its original
size at 133 LPI should be scanned at:
2X133X100% which = 266 dpi.
Since 133 lpi is typical of high quality brochures and 266 dpi does not
strike me as very high. After all, we have 600 dpi laser printers and
scanners as well as imagesetters which output at 1270 and 2540 dpi
and sometimes higher.
I bet there's a missing piece in this formula, some sort of caveat.
Anyone know what it is? Thanks, Pete Tamas

Subject: Where do the AV users hang out?
A friend of mine just bought a Centris 660av, and wants to know good sources
for information on Mac AV issues, including software compatibility, AV-savvy
free/shareware, etc.
Are there any AV-specific lists yet? (He only can get email)
Does anyone know of cool AV-savvy sound editing free/shareware?
TIA,
John Saxton
